Abstract

The main objective of this work is to evaluate the marula oil yield and physicochemical properties of the marula oil bioodiesel in Nigeria. The marula oil with methanol in ratio 6:1 and potassium hydroxide catalyst of concentration of 1.4 wt% were heated in a beaker placed on a hot plate with magnetic stirrer for 30 minutes at a temperature of 60 C and operated at a speed of 305.5 rpm. The most common physicochemical properties of the marula biodiesel were determined using standardized laboratory methods of the Association of Official and Analytical Chemist. The oil yield of the marula was found to be 58.7%. The saponification value, iodine value, free fatty acid, , acid value, peroxide value, cetane number, density, viscosity, calorific value, flash point, and pour point for both marula oil and marula biodiesel were found to be (187.72 mgKOH/g), (61.77 gl/100 g), (1.72% and 0.21%), (3.42 mgKOH/g and

0.44 mgKOH/g),(10.67 meg/kg and 2.4 meq/kg), (51 and 55.1),(943 kg/m and 850 kg/m),, (41mm2/sec 5.0mm2/sec, (38.40 MJ/kg and 42.89 MJ/kg), (240oC and 175oC) and (5oC and 3oC) respectively. The results of the analysis fall within the specification range of international standards for biodiesel specifications.
