Abstract

Chemicals are stored and transported from one point to other in glass wares and plastic containers, which are prone to breaking in services.  A study has been made of protection of mild steel lined with various quantity (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g) of glass wool exposed to three-corrosive media namely 3.5 wt% NaCl, 0.5M HCl, and 0.5M H2SO4; using weight loss method under static conditions at room temperature and potentiodynamic polarisation test. Weight loss result shown that Mild steels lined with 2.0 g of glass wool were the most adequately protected in the three-corrosive media; in order of corrosion rate values of 0.430 mm/yr in 0.5 M HCl, 0.053 mm/yr in 0.5 H2SO4 and 0.035 mm/yr in 3.5 wt% NaCl, respectively. While the potentiodynamic polarisation result revealed the corrosion rate values as 0.078 mm/yr in 0.5 M H2SO4, 0.057 mm/yr in 0.5 M HCl, and the least was in 3.5 wt% NaCl (0.022 x 10-5 mm/yr). Comparison of the corrosion rate data of the two methods established that glass wool can protect mild steel in the studied environment.
