In this paper, the stabilizing effects of bamboo stem ash (BSA) on the geotechnical properties of lateritic soil are assessed and compared with effects of cement on the same soil. Laboratory tests such as natural moisture content, specific gravity, Atterberg limits, California bearing ratio (CBR) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) were carried out on the soil samples in accordance with specified standards both before and after the bamboo stem ash and cement were added separately in varying proportions of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% by weight of soil. The Optimum Moisture Content increased from 19.43% at 0% to 22.00% at 10% BSA stabilizer while the Maximum Dry Density reduced from 1.78 g/cm3 to 1.59 g/cm3 at 6% BSA but later increased to 1.72 g/cm3. The unsoaked CBR value of the soil in its natural state was 17.23% and it rose to 21.85% on addition of 10% bamboo stem ash by weight of soil. The unconfined compressive strength improved from 149.68 kPa in the natural state to 269.42 kPa at 10% bamboo stem ash content. Overall, the results of the analyses showed that the bamboo stem ash enhanced the properties of the lateritic soil.
