The development of expired drugs into directly applicable corrosion inhibitors for engineering parts will not only help to solve the global problem of corrosion but also offer legal and profitable outlets for extending the cradle-to grave life of engineering plants whilst eliminating the need for their illegal resale, as currently happens in many developing countries. The expired, biodegradable, and environmentally-friendly drug; Isoniazid was evaluated for corrosion inhibition capability for API-5L steel in 0.5M H2SO4. Potentiodynamic polarization revealed a drastic drop in corrosion rate when API-5L samples were immersed in 0.5M sulphuric acid environment containing pulverized expired isoniazid. The corrosion rates decreased from 11.27 mm/yr for API-5L samples immersed in blank 0.5M H2SO4 to 4.79 mm/yr for the environment containing 0.6g/l of expired isoniazid drug. The polarization curves showed that expired isoniazid drugs inhibit corrosion of API-5L steel in 0.5M H2SO4 in a mixed manner. The concentration of dissolved iron ions in the environment decreased with increasing concentration of the expired isoniazid in the environment. Surface analysis showed progressive covering and thickening of adsorbed surface layer of expired isoniazid drug film on the immersed API-5L steel surface with increasing concentration of the expired drug in the environment. The corrosion was inhibited via mixed-mode monolayer adsorption of expired isoniazid drug molecules at active corrosion sites, restricting metal-environment contact and shutting the corrosion process. The level and effectiveness of corrosion inhibition achievable increased with increasing concentration of the expired isoniazid drug in the metal-acid environment. Other evaluation methods support these conclusions.
